Wartime: the Merengue’s trenches

Tossal de les Cases, Tossal del Déu or El Merengue is a hill and a place for historical memory. It is a musealized space where the visitor can know the most relevant events that took place on may 1938 within the context of fights between republican army and national army of the Spanish Civil War. In El Merengue, the national army wanted to keep the area called Cap de pont de Balaguer and the republican army wanted to recover it. Most of the soldiers were very young, between 17 and 18 years old, the so called Lleva del Biberó. On the top of the hill a monument was erected to remember fallen fighters.

The meeting point for the visit is Espai Orígens. The travel between the visitor centre and Tossal del Déu is possible with own vehicle.
